Leonardo DiCaprio Invests in Sustainable Seafood Line

As if there weren’t enough reasons to love Leonardo DiCaprio, the Academy Award-winning actor, documentary film maker and founder of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (an organization dedicated to protecting the health and well-being of earth’s inhabitants) has again demonstrated his commitment to the environment.

DiCaprio announced he is investing in LoveTheWild, a food company that supplies sustainably sourced frozen seafood meals that are free of hormones, dyes and antibiotics. The company is working to protect the earth and reduce environmental impacts by focusing on sustainable and environmentally friendly aquaculture (fish farming).

The connection between the actor and the food company came through Fish 2.0, a network that connects seafood businesses with investors.

“Seafood is a primary source of protein for nearly a billion people—but climate change, acidification and overfishing are putting increased pressure on our oceans’ natural stability,” DiCaprio said in a statement.

Seafood can be a healthy source of protein, and some varieties like salmon and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, specifically DHA and EPA, which are associated with reduced risk for heart disease. The USDA recommends eating seafood twice a week, for a total of around 8 ounces weekly.

Up to 90 percent of U.S. consumers are not meeting the recommended intake of seafood, according to data from Agricultural Research Service scientists. A few groups in particular—women, those aged 19 to 30 and people from lower income and educational backgrounds—tend to eat less or no seafood.

LoveTheWild is hoping to address this issue by providing an environmentally friendly form of protein from sources that consumers can trust. A press release from the company states that “LoveTheWild’s frozen seafood products utilize traceable, farm-raised fish sourced from the most well-managed aquaculture facilities in the world.”

The company chooses farms that specialize in a particular species, and uses third-party verification to ensure that best practices are followed.

LoveTheWild works with farms in locations around the world, including Vietnam, Mexico, Alabama and Canada, to farm fish like striped bass, red trout, catfish and barramundi for their frozen meals. Most of these fish are classified as Best Choices by Seafood Watch, a program run by Monterey Bay Aquarium that helps consumers choose fish and seafood that has been farmed or fished in ways that are safe for sea life and habitats.

A few of the farms the group works with are very small or fairly new and don’t have certifications yet, but with the help of experts and through site visits, LoveTheWild makes the call to work with them or not.

These good-catch frozen meals can be found at stores across the United States, including Wegmans, Sprouts and Whole Foods. You may even get lucky and bump into Leo in the freezer aisle (hey, a girl can dream).
