Compared to those who stick to the same rotation of familiar foods, adventurous eaters — people who are open to trying and enjoying a wide variety of uncommon foods (think kimchi, polenta and seitan)–are more physically active and weigh less, according to a Cornell food and brand lab study published in the journal Obesity.
Embracing a more adventurous eating style may be a wise way for people to lose weight without feeling deprived by a strict diet, speculates the study’s co-author, Brian Wansink, PhD. To grow your food repertoire in the new year, sign up for a culinary tour to discover new tastes, take an ethnic cooking class to learn about exotic ingredients, or start rotating dinner club or recipe exchange with friends.
